Product Schema Quality: structured data for products

Product JSON-LD lets AI engines extract product facts reliably without parsing raw HTML. Duplicate schema blocks and missing AggregateRating are the two most common issues that prevent full marks on this signal.

What this signal measures

Product JSON-LD schema is the structured data block on product pages that tells crawlers the name, description, price, brand, and availability of a product in a machine-readable format. AI engines use this schema to extract product facts reliably without needing to parse raw HTML. A missing or malformed Product schema means AI engines must guess at your product data from unstructured text, which is less accurate and less likely to result in citations.

The highest-value addition to Product schema beyond the basics is AggregateRating: the structured representation of your product reviews. Products with schema-backed reviews are far more likely to be cited in comparison queries.

How the score is calculated

SEO Intel samples one product page and inspects the HTML for Product JSON-LD.

Common failure modes

Issue 1

Duplicate Product schema blocks

Some Shopify themes output both a @type: Product block and a @type: ProductGroup block on the same page. Some also have a legacy schema block from a previous app still present alongside the theme's own schema. Validators flag this as an error; AI engines may use the wrong block.

Issue 2

No AggregateRating even when reviews exist

Many stores have product reviews but those reviews are not outputting AggregateRating schema. This happens when review apps are installed but schema output is disabled, or when reviews are displayed via custom code that does not include schema markup.

Issue 3

No Product schema at all

Some minimal or custom themes do not include Product JSON-LD. Without it, AI engines have no structured data to anchor product facts to.

How to fix it

For duplicate schema: Open Shopify Admin → Online Store → Themes → Edit code → sections/main-product.liquid. Search for application/ld+json. If you see more than one block, identify which is the current theme's complete schema and remove the other. Also check snippets/ for any legacy schema snippets that may have been left by a removed app.

For missing AggregateRating: Install a reviews app (Shopify Reviews, Judge.me, Loox, Okendo, or similar). Ensure the app's schema output setting is enabled. Most review apps add AggregateRating schema automatically once reviews exist and the setting is active.

For missing Product schema entirely: Add a Product JSON-LD block to sections/main-product.liquid. At minimum include: @type: Product, name, description, brand.name, and an offers block with price, priceCurrency, and availability.

Validate your product schema at Google's Rich Results Test by entering a product page URL.

Check your product schema now. The free AI Visibility audit samples a product page, checks for Product JSON-LD, detects duplicate type blocks, and checks for AggregateRating. Also see Signal 6: Answer-Ready Product Descriptions for the content layer check.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my theme outputs Product JSON-LD?
Go to any product page on your store, right-click, and choose View Page Source. Search for 'application/ld+json'. If you see a block containing '@type': 'Product', your theme is outputting product schema. If you see it twice, you have a duplicate issue. If you do not see it at all, your theme is not outputting product schema.
What is AggregateRating schema and why does it matter for AI visibility?
AggregateRating is a Schema.org type that represents the average star rating for a product, based on a specific count of reviews. AI engines use this data to answer comparison queries such as 'which hiking boot has the best reviews' or 'top-rated tents under 100 pounds'. A product without AggregateRating schema cannot appear in those AI-generated comparison answers even if it has excellent reviews displayed on the page.
Does Product schema affect Google Shopping as well as AI search?
Yes. Google Shopping uses Product schema to populate product listings, prices, and availability in the Shopping tab and in Shopping ads. Duplicate or malformed Product schema can cause Google Merchant Center disapprovals in addition to reducing AI visibility. Fixing product schema improves both channels simultaneously.
