About Page: E-E-A-T for AI engines

AI search engines use your About page to assess whether your store is a credible, citable source. A 200-word, first-person About page at /pages/about passes the E-E-A-T signal check. Generic or absent About pages score 0.

What this signal measures

Google's quality rater guidelines define E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. AI search engines use similar signals to assess whether a source is credible enough to cite. Your About page is the most direct surface for demonstrating these signals: it tells AI engines who is behind the store, what their experience is, and why the information on the store can be trusted.

A high-scoring About page for AI visibility has a minimum word count of 200, uses first-person language (I, we, my), and names the founder or team. Anonymous or minimal About pages score poorly because AI engines cannot attribute the content to a real, verifiable person or organisation.

How the score is calculated

SEO Intel fetches yourstore.com/pages/about and strips HTML to count words and check for personal language markers.

Common failure modes

Issue 1: Most common

No About page at /pages/about

The store has no page with the handle about. SEO Intel checks this specific path because it is the Shopify standard and the path AI crawlers follow. An About page at a different URL (e.g. /pages/our-story) is not detected by this check.

Issue 2

About page exists but is written in corporate third person

Generic About pages that describe the brand in third person ("This store was founded in...") score lower than pages written in first person. First-person language is a proxy for real human authorship, which AI engines weight positively for E-E-A-T.

Issue 3

About page is a single paragraph under 100 words

Short About pages with a single generic sentence ("We sell quality outdoor products") provide no meaningful E-E-A-T signal. AI engines treat content below a substance threshold as effectively absent.

How to fix it

Step 1. In Shopify Admin, go to Online Store → Pages → Add page (or find your existing About page).

Step 2. Set the page handle to about. This is the URL slug at /pages/about that SEO Intel checks.

Step 3. Write 200 to 400 words in first person covering these points:

Step 4. Avoid writing the page as a mission statement. Concrete, specific, first-person content ("I started this store in 2019 after...") scores better than abstract brand positioning ("We believe in quality..."). A specific founding story with a real name is the most impactful single element.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google use the About page for E-E-A-T assessment?
Yes. Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines specifically instruct raters to check for information about who is behind a website, including About pages, and to assess whether that information establishes real-world experience and authority. AI engines trained on similar signals follow the same pattern.
What if my About page is at a different URL than /pages/about?
SEO Intel specifically checks the /pages/about path because that is the Shopify standard. If your About page is at /pages/our-story or another URL, it will not be detected by this signal check. The fix is to either move the page to /pages/about (by changing the page handle in Shopify Admin) or create a new page at that path.
Do I need to include my full name on the About page?
Using a real first name improves E-E-A-T scoring directly. Full name is ideal. If privacy is a concern, at minimum include your first name, your location (city or country), and how long you have been running the store. The goal is to establish that a real person is behind the business, not to publish a full personal biography.
