llms.txt is a proposed convention for a plain-text file summarising your store for AI crawlers. Fewer than 10% of AI crawlers currently use it, but it takes under 30 minutes to add. Fix robots.txt and FAQPage schema first.
llms.txt is a proposed convention for a plain-text file at the root of a website (yourstore.com/llms.txt) that summarises the site's content in a format optimised for large language model consumption. The format was proposed in September 2024 as an analogue to robots.txt, but for LLM context rather than crawler access.
Honest caveat: Fewer than 10% of AI crawlers currently read llms.txt. It is a low-effort addition but not a high-impact one. SEO Intel includes it in the ARS because the effort required is very low (under 30 minutes) and adoption is growing. Fix robots.txt, FAQPage schema, and sameAs first; add llms.txt after those are done.
llms.txt found at /llms.txt, 5 or more meaningful lines, 200 or more characters, and no Shopify boilerplate detected.llms.txt file found at the expected path. The vast majority of Shopify stores do not have a llms.txt file because Shopify does not generate one automatically. Unlike robots.txt and sitemap.xml, this file must be created manually.
A file exists but contains only "Powered by Shopify" or other auto-generated text with no brand-specific content. AI crawlers that read llms.txt gain no useful context about the store.
