AI search engines extract specific text chunks to answer user questions. Product descriptions that open with a standalone factual statement, include specific numbers, and reach 150 words are far more likely to be cited than vague marketing copy.
AI search engines do not rank pages. They extract specific chunks of text and use them to answer user questions. A product description that reads as a standalone, factual answer to "what is this product and who is it for?" is far more likely to be extracted than one written as a vague marketing claim.
SEO Intel checks three proxy signals for "answer-readiness": does the opening sentence establish the product fully (at least 40 characters), does the description contain at least one specific number or measurement, and does it reach 150 words. These thresholds are derived from how AI engines weight extractable text chunks.
The audit samples one product page from your sitemap and extracts the description text from the Product JSON-LD schema (more reliable than scraping rendered HTML).
Some Shopify themes output a truncated or empty description in the Product schema even when the visible product description is long. The audit checks the schema field, not the rendered page text. If the description in JSON-LD is blank or truncated at 50 characters, the signal fails regardless of what the page shows.
Descriptions that begin with marketing copy ("Elevate your outdoor experience...") fail the opening-sentence check. AI engines prefer answer-first format: the first sentence should state what the product is. For example: "The Odyssey 3-Season Sleeping Bag is a 900-fill-power down bag rated to -5C, designed for backpacking trips of 3 or more nights."
Vague descriptions ("lightweight and durable") with no specific measurements, weights, quantities, or capacities score 0 on the numbers sub-signal. Specific numbers dramatically increase extractability because they allow AI engines to answer precise comparison questions ("which tent is under 2kg?").
Rewrite product descriptions using this structure:
Sentence 1 (the answer): State the product name, its primary function, and its most specific defining attribute. Example: "The [Product Name] is a [specific type] designed for [specific use case], measuring [key dimension or weight]."
Body (150+ words): Cover materials, dimensions or weight, capacity or quantity, who the product is for, key use cases, and what makes it different from similar products. Include at least 3 specific numbers.
Closing: One sentence on what the buyer should know before purchasing (size guide, compatibility, care instructions).
Verify that your theme's Product JSON-LD outputs the full description. In sections/main-product.liquid, find the "description" field in the schema block and ensure it references {{ product.description | strip_html | escape }} not a truncated version.
