Entity consistency signal

What this signal measures

AI search engines build a knowledge graph of entities: brands, products, organisations, and people. To include your store in that graph, they need to verify that your brand exists and that it is consistent across multiple platforms. The sameAs property in an Organization JSON-LD schema does this job. It is an array of URLs pointing to your brand's profiles on other platforms: Instagram, Facebook, Google Business Profile, Pinterest, and so on.

When an AI engine sees the same brand name at your store and in the sameAs array, it can confidently link the entity and is more likely to cite the store in responses about your brand or product category.

How the score is calculated

SEO Intel fetches your homepage and parses the JSON-LD for an Organization schema with a sameAs array.

Common failure modes

Issue 1: Most common

No Organization schema at all

Most Shopify themes do not include Organization JSON-LD by default. Unless it was added manually or via a schema app, the homepage has no @type: Organization block. AI engines have no structured signal for brand identity.

Issue 2

Schema present but sameAs array is empty or missing

Some themes or apps add a minimal Organization schema with only a name and URL, omitting the sameAs array entirely. Without sameAs, the schema provides less entity-linking value.

Issue 3

sameAs URLs include inactive or incorrect profiles

The sameAs array contains URLs that return 404, redirect to a generic platform homepage, or point to a different brand. AI engines attempt to verify sameAs URLs; invalid ones reduce confidence in the entity link.

How to fix it

Step 1. In Shopify Admin, go to Online Store → Themes → Edit code. Open sections/header.liquid.

Step 2. Before the closing </header> tag, paste an Organization JSON-LD block. Replace the example values with your actual brand name and profile URLs:

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Organization",
  "name": "Your Store Name",
  "url": "https://yourstore.com",
  "sameAs": [
    "https://instagram.com/yourstorehandle",
    "https://facebook.com/yourstorepage",
    "https://www.google.com/maps/place/YourBusinessListing",
    "https://pinterest.com/yourstorehandle"
  ]
}
</script>

Step 3. Each URL in sameAs must be a real, live profile page for your brand. Open each one in a browser to confirm it loads correctly before saving.

Step 4. Validate the schema at Google's Rich Results Test by entering your homepage URL.

Check your sameAs status now. The free AI Visibility audit fetches your homepage, parses your Organization schema, and counts valid sameAs entries. The report shows your exact score and what is needed to pass. Also see Signal 5: Brand Name Consistency for the related brand name check.

Frequently asked questions

What URLs should I include in the sameAs array?
Include the full URL of each platform profile where your brand has an active presence: Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, YouTube, LinkedIn, X (Twitter), Etsy, or any other directory where your store is listed. Each URL must be a direct profile page, not a platform homepage. Aim for at least 4 real, active profiles.
Does Organization sameAs affect Google search ranking?
Organization sameAs does not directly affect Google's ranking algorithm, but it contributes to Knowledge Panel eligibility and entity recognition in Google's Knowledge Graph. Stronger entity signals can improve how your brand appears in Google search results, Google Shopping, and AI Overviews.
Can I add Organization schema without editing theme code?
Yes. You can use a Shopify app that injects structured data into the page head, or add it via a custom HTML block in your theme header using the native theme editor. The result is the same: a JSON-LD script block on every page of the store.
